The need for Amory arose when the Kansas City, Memphis, and Birmingham Railroad companies sought a mid-point between Memphis and Birmingham. Amory was laid out as a town in 1887, following which people from the neighboring Cotton Gin Port shifted to Amory. It is in Monroe County.
