La Monte was platted in 1866. It was first named Boomer after a railroad constructor foreman in the area. With the expansion of the Missouri Pacific Railroad to the area in 1870, the La Monte post office was set, giving the town its current name.
With a population of about 1,050 people, the area keeps a small town feel with a sense of community. The school district is a focus in the town as well as churches such as the La Monte Christian Church, Harmony Missionary Baptist Church, ACIM Missouri Apostolic Church and La Monte United Methodist Church.
