In 1867 the first homestead was claimed in the rugged Ozark Wilderness of Southwest Missouri that would someday become Hollister. By the turn of the century a Post office and general store was opened, and Hollister was born.  Named Hollister after the California town and also the birthplace of the daughter of the General Store owner, Rueben Kirkham. As many Ozark's settlements the coming of railroad boosted growth and gave a way for the area to transport its agriculture, a variety of berries, vegetables, fruit from its orchards, cotton, and tobacco was shipped from the Hollister Depot. In 1912 the beautiful development of and English style village, now called Downing Street attracted visitors from all over the world.  Historic Downing Street still attracts visitors from all over the world each year. Featuring a variety of wonderful restaurants, stores, and a historic inn.
