Five miles from the Lake Michigan coastline sits charming Whitehall, Michigan on White Lake. Recorded history began around 1859 when Charles Mears, a noted lumber baron, mapped out the village along with Giles B. Slocum, naming it Mears. With its strategic location for floating and distributing lumber the population quickly grew. In 1862, it was renamed Whitehall and incorporated as the Village of Whitehall in 1867. Finally in 1942 it was incorporated as a city. History and fine arts are an integral part of the city. Frank Lloyd Wright fans would love to visit, as three cottages and a house, built from 1897 to 1905, call Whitehall home. Lighthouse enthusiasts are able to tour the White River Lighthouse as it was deactivated by the U.S. Coast Guard in 1960. The beautiful brick lighthouse now serves as a museum and features exhibits about the area's history related to the shipping and logging industries.
