Named in honor of geographer, geologist, and ethnologist Henry Schoolcraft, Schoolcraft, MI is a charming village nestled in the southwest corner of Kalamazoo County. It holds the distinction of being the first settlement in the county, platted in 1831, six years before Michigan achieved statehood.

Rich in history, Schoolcraft is home to many well-preserved landmarks, including Dr. Nathan Thomas's home, which served as a station on the Underground Railroad; the First Presbyterian Church of Schoolcraft, built in 1849; and the Schoolcraft Ladies Library, established in 1896.

The village has a literary claim to fame as it was the setting for James Fenimore Cooper's 1848 frontier novel The Oak Openings. The community's first settler, Bazel Harrison, even appeared as a character in the story, known as "The Bee Keeper."

But Schoolcraft isn't just about history, it's about tradition and community spirit, too. The village has proudly hosted its 4th of July celebration nearly every year since 1925, bringing residents and visitors together for one of the area's most beloved annual events.

Fire and Water Damage Happens in Schoolcraft, MI

Bitterly cold Michigan winters often mean an increased reliance on furnaces, fireplaces, and space heaters. When not used properly, these heating sources can lead to fire damage. If your Schoolcraft home or business experiences a fire, contacting a professional restoration company as soon as possible can help minimize further damage and speed up recovery.

Schoolcraft experiences all four seasons in full force - from warm, humid summers to cold, snowy winters and everything in between. During the winter months, heavy snow, sleet, and ice can create water hazards that may lead to property damage. Acting quickly to begin the water damage restoration process is essential to protecting your home or business and preventing additional issues.
