Keedysville has an extensive and confusing history as to how it acquired its name. The community was first known as Hess’s Mill, named after Jacob Hess who owned a mill in the area. In 1820, the Sharpsburg to Boonsboro Turnpike was constructed and this town was located in the exact center of the turnpike. Because of this, the town was named Centreville. If you are a Maryland resident, you are most likely scratching your head right now and thinking about the other area in Queen Anne’s County called Centreville. Well, you’re right! After a post office was established in THAT Centreville, the name of THIS Centreville was promptly changed to Keedysville. Who knew such a simple town could have such a complex naming history behind it!
Keedysville has always been a very small town, but around the year 2000, the population doubled from 400 to about 800 residents. This was due to different attractions opening up or simply gaining publicity. Attractions such as caverns, farms, equestrian centers, or the Pry House Field Hospital Museum, just to name a few.
