River Ridge Cleanup and Restoration

River Ridge is a small community in Jefferson Parish and is a suburb of New Orleans.  The French developed River Ridge in the late 18th and early 19th centuries primarily as sugar plantations.  The major landowners at that time were members of the Trudeau and Sauve families.  Some parts of the River Ridge community are still named after them.

The River Ridge area remained rural farmland until after World War II.  Thanks to funding from the G.I. Bill which helped returning veterans buy homes, a large-scale suburban development started along the Mississippi River.  This area was named “Little Farms” and still holds that name today.  With the speed that these subdivisions were being built, the name River Ridge was officially given to this area in 1974 to help with the confusion of it being between Kenner, Harahan, Metairie, and the Mississippi River.  Residents of River Ridge have a very short drive to the shopping centers in Metairie or Kenner, as well as the industrial and warehouse parts of Elmwood.

The River Ridge community has an impressive 6 schools inside its borders.  Most businesses in River Ridge are all along Jefferson Highway, which curves along the Mississippi River less than 1/3 mile away.  This part of Louisiana does see all 4 seasons, but the winters are very mild and the summers are very hot and humid.  This community deals with water and flood damage much more than fire.  Being so close to the Mississippi River means that the base flood elevation is much higher than areas closer to Lake Pontchartrain.  With the constant humidity and close proximity to the Mississippi River, mold damage can be a serious problem and should be closely monitored for the health of homes and the people that live there.  Hurricanes and tropical storms are something else that this community and those around it deal with yearly.  These can bring flooding rainwater, damaging winds, and fire damage due to lighting and ruptured gas pipes.
