History of Mandeville
Bernard Xavier de Marigny began developing the city of Mandeville in 1834. Mandeville was officially incorporated in 1840. Mandeville became known as a travel destination for residents of New Orleans to rest and enjoy the beautiful lakefront scenery. Historic social landmarks, such as the Dew Drop Social and Ruby’s Roadhouse, attracted frequent visitors for live music and dance parties. Famous jazz musicians would take steamboats across Lake Pontchartrain to entertain at these venues. Famous musicians who played at Dew Drop were Buddy Petit, Kid Ory, and Louis Armstrong.

Present-day Mandeville is a thriving waterfront community laden with historic charm. After the Causeway bridge was completed in 1956, the population and economy of Mandeville began to boom. Mandeville is now known for its premier shopping and dining experiences. Still, Mandeville residents enjoy a slower-paced lifestyle than our south shore New Orleans neighbors.
Each year, thousands of visitors travel to Mandeville for the lush natural environment, family-friendly activities, diverse shops and restaurants, and cultural events.
