History of the Town of Madisonville
Comprised of only about two and a half square miles, the town of Madisonville is one of the oldest settlements in the state of Louisiana. Madisonville is also the oldest permanent settlement in St. Tammany Parish. French settlers first arrived in Madisonville in 1773. Originally named Coquille because of the abundance of shells in the area, the town was founded by Jean Baptiste Baham in 1800. Later in 1817, the town was officially incorporated and renamed Madisonville in honor of U.S. President James Madison. Madisonville’s early economy relied upon its shipbuilding, timber, cattle, sheep, brickmaking, and rice harvesting industries.

Madisonville is now known as the historic, charming town located along the picturesque Tchefuncte River. This small town has less than one thousand residents but welcomes visitors every day from neighboring communities who patron its seafood restaurants, locally owned shops, and small businesses. Madisonville also draws in travelers because of the Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum, the Tchefuncte River Lighthouse, and Fairview State Park. A few notable Madisonville annual events include the Wooden Boat Festival, the Madisonville Chamber Gumbo Cookoff, and Krewe de Tchefuncte Mardi Gras Boat Parade.
