Jefferson, also known as “Old Jefferson”, is located in the Jefferson Parish of Louisiana. It is on the north side or what the locals refer to as the “East Bank” of the Mississippi River. Jefferson is very centrally located and is surrounded by Metairie to the north, New Orleans to the east, Kenner to the west, and the Mississippi River to the south.
Early French colonial documents show that the Jefferson area was once part of the “Tchoupitoulas Coast” of Native American settlement. During the Civil War, a military camp called Camp Parapet was built by Confederate forces to defend New Orleans from an upriver attack along the Mississippi River which lead to massive fire damage.
The Jefferson area is comprised of multiple small communities dating back to the early 19th century. Hoeyville, New Carrolton, Southport, Shrewsbury, Azalea Garden, Camellia Gardens, and Jefferson Heights are just a few of the local neighborhoods in this area.
The quietly tucked away Jefferson has a total area of 3.3 square miles and is mostly residential. A lot of the homes in this area have a classic Southern shotgun style to them. This style of raised home is very common in the South and has to deal with a lot of the issues that living in the Gulf South brings with it.
