Harahan is located in Jefferson Parish and occupies land once known as the Soniat Plantation, primarily used for farming and raising cattle by Southern University and A&M College in the late 1800s. Harahan was named after James Theodore Harahan, who was the president of the Illinois Central Railroad. The Illinois Central track runs parallel to Airline Highway, through Elmwood, and then right over the Mississippi River next to the Huey P. Long bridge.
Prior to the Huey P. Long bridge being built, Harahan was one of the few points on the entire Mississippi River where rail cars were allowed to cross. This made the Harahan area very important to the transportation of goods and equipment. During World War II the Freiburg Mahogany company began manufacturing critical aircraft and boat components to support the war effort. This activity greatly increased the employment options in the area, which saw the creation of new neighborhoods and housing developments in the surrounding areas. Between 1940 and 1950, Harahan saw its population triple in size.
