Sheridan, Indiana is a small town with a rich history dating back to 1860. Built around the Monon railroad, Sheridan developed a bustling economy comprised of mills and factories that flourished around the turn of the 20th century. Now a town of 3,000 residents, Sheridan boasts a beautiful landscape of farms, manufacturing and a quaint downtown with idyllic small town charm. Perhaps the most well known attraction to the Sheridan area is the Boxley cabin. George Boxley was a Virginia born abolitionist who fled Virginia after allegedly fomenting a slave rebellion in 1816. Arrested for his crimes, Boxley escaped from jail and fled north with his wife Hannah. After evading bounty hunters for twelve years, Boxley built the Boxley Cabin on a hilltop in what is now in Sheridan in 1828. After staking his claim to 80 acres of land, he is credited with constructing the first school in the township for his own 11 children and the children of other settlers. He taught the students themselves, using his history, literature and law books. Local legend holds that George Boxley supported the Underground Railroad by hiding runaway slaves underneath his cabin. George Boxley died in 1865 and is buried nearby. The Boxley cabin is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was restored by the Sheridan Historical Society. Visitors are able to tour the cabin and learn more about its fascinating history.
The town of Sheridan has weathered untold changes and hardships over its rich history, including a fire in 1913 that started in a lumber company and destroyed much of the downtown area. They came the same day that I called, they immediately evaluated the water damage and moisture in various locations. They dealt with the problem and cleaned up the mess. In addition the service people were calm and pleasant in a stressful situation. When you are already upset you do not need unpleasant people, their men were wonderful.
