Shadeland is a rural town of 1,757 in Union Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana, within the Lafayette metro area. Located along State Road 25. The Quiatenon (Wea) people of the Miami tribe lived in the area as early as 1702.
Joseph Hawkins and William Jones platted the area in 1824. William Taylor, who arrived from Virginia in 1828, named Shadeland for its wooded shade, built a gristmill on Wea Creek, and later constructed a brick home that still stands. His grandson Bennett built Taylor Station, a grain elevator on the Louisville, New Albany, and Chicago Railroad that operated until 1975. The Farmers Institute and Stidham United Methodist Church are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Shadeland retains a small-town, neighborly character with family farms and modern development. It incorporated to avoid annexation by Lafayette and preserve its rural identity, while offering parks, recreation, fire protection, and zoning/permitting services.
