Oakland City was laid out in 1856 and was actually named after the areas presence of their oak trees. The post office didn't come along until 1860. One of the highlights of this great community is its local college "Oakland City University." It actually began as the only General Baptist affiliated university in 1885 and the schools sports teams were called the "mighty oaks" because of the oak trees in the area. 

The community is known for many notable people over the years. Two professional baseball players are from Oakland City Indiana. One being Gil Hodges who played for the Brooklyn Dodgers and the second being Edd Roush who played for the Cincinnati Reds. 

The community has many church bodies along with beautiful community parks to offer their small community. The sense of community is strong in Oakland City and the history of the community is rich with characters.

The community has yet to see any catastrophic storms, but we know this community would work together if that were to happen.
