The city of Lawrence, Indiana has a unique history and a deserved reputation as a vibrant community brimming with year-round attractions. The city is centered around the area that was once the home of the Fort Benjamin Harrison military base. This base was active for eight decades and although it was inactivated in 1991, there remains a large military presence in this city on the northeast side of Indianapolis. Many of the base's early 1900s buildings such as officers' quarters, barracks and service buildings were preserved and reborn as business and restaurants. Perhaps the biggest attraction for visitors to Lawrence is Fort Harrison State Park. A hidden gem set against the backdrop of a bustling urban city, this park is a dream for outdoor enthusiasts. The 1,700 acre park boasts multi-use trails, fishing access on Fall Creek, hayrides and horse trails, a dog park and a Nature Center. Visitors in the winter enjoy cross-country skiing, ice fishing, and one of Central Indiana's biggest sledding hills. There is also a golf course designed by renowned golf architect Pete Dye. Out of town visitors can stay in the park at one of the bases's historic buildings which have been transformed into lodging and events centers.
