Named after Washington Irving, the neighborhood of Irvington is a 545-acre historic district in Indianapolis. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. The town was built as a quiet suburb where artists, politicians, military leaders, and heads of local industry lived. The neighborhood is located five miles east of downtown Indianapolis. Most Irvington homes were built before 1960. Even with all of this rich history Irvington might be best known for the Irvington Halloween Festival. The non-profit event was founded in 1947 by the Irvington Community Council in an effort to bring together residents, neighborhood organizations, and businesses for a celebration of heritage and community. The festival includes a 5-mile run, a pageant, Halloween-themed movies, ghost tours, roller derby, and a haunted puppet show.
