Eastgate is a neighborhood on the east side of Indianapolis located within the I-465 loop. The area was originally known for the Eastgate Shopping Center, which later became a mall, first mall in Indiana. The neighborhood has mature trees, and older homes with a variety of architectural styles of the 1930s-1950s. There hasn't been much new construction since the mid 1960s. The neighborhood was popular in the 1960s and 70s due to the shopping center and its vicinity to the downtown area. It was also popular because of nearby manufacturing jobs, after the closing of several manufacturing plants, many residents moved out. The community is the home of the East Side Voice, an independent newspaper with over 25,000 readers. Eastgate has highly rated schools including Warren Central High School which has nationally ranked athletic programs.
