Troy, with a population of approximately 11,000, is a city located in south-central Madison County, Illinois.
The city’s humble beginnings started in 1819 with 10 acres of land in Southern Illinois which became the future city of Troy. Settler John Jarvis sold the acreage for $10 per acre to James Riggen and David Hendershott. The land was then mapped out, surveyed, and renamed Troy by James Riggen. Troy would become the first stagecoach stop for travelers to and from St. Louis, 18 miles west of the budding community. A notable historic figure, U.S. Senator Paul Simon lived in Troy and was the youngest editor of the town's newspaper.
