The village of Third Lake, Illinois is a town in Lake County; it isn’t the third lake in a series, but it is located on Third Lake, which is part of the Chain O’ Lakes (“The Chain”). It’s a small community – approximately .85 square miles, of which about a third is water. 

In Northern Illinois, a town being located on a lake is not much of a claim to fame, although it is important for both the residents and the many (mostly summer) visitors. What distinguishes Third Lake is that is the headquarters of the Serbian Orthodox Diocese of New Gracanica – Midwestern America. The New Gracanica church and monastery complex houses a detailed replica of the New Gracanica church and monastery complex in Kosovo.  

The replica is stunningly detailed, and it is –unusually – larger than the original monastery. A Serbian association purchased the land in 1977 and completed the building in 1984 when they had church officials consecrate the building. It includes a set of hand-carved wooden doors that depict 23 monasteries and churches from across different regions of Serbia.
