Pawnee is a village in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. It is part of the Springfield, Illinois, Metropolitan Statistical Area. Pawnee is loosely represented in the video game Watch Dogs, though the geographic position is quite different. Due to contiguous map size constraints in the open-world game, Pawnee is shown to be relatively close to Chicago, however being located near the center of Illinois far from Chicago.
Pawnee's economy was centered on coal mining for most of the 20th century. The coal industry began with the Horse Creek Coal Mine, followed by the Victor Coal Co. and the Peabody Coal Co.. Peabody #10, the world's largest coal mine, was located just east of Pawnee and closed in 1994. The high school building have been destroyed by fires in 1923, 1958 and 1960.
Despite being located in the southeastern part of Sangamon County, Pawnee is susceptible to water damage, whether it's intense thunderstorms, or faulty appliances. The community is named after the Pawnee Tribe. On August 6, 2023, a large and long-tracked EF2 tornado hit north of Pawnee, Illinois destroying houses and businesses.
