A small and proud community, Green Oaks is located in Libertyville Township, 35 miles north of Chicago in Lake County. Founded in 1960 when the name was officially changed from Oak Grove to Green Oaks, the village was first settled by Irish immigrants in the 1840’s. From its inception, village ordinance provided for a pattern of one, two, and five acre lot residential zoning and strict standards over environmentally sensitive lands. William D. Shaw, the first village president stated in 1960 that "the village is not prey for the selfish real estate interests bent on building shanty towns, but strives instead to be a community of high merit."
