Auburn is a city in Sangamon County, Illinois, United States. It is part of the Springfield, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. Auburn was originally platted in 1836, a mile north of its present location. It was one of several towns named Auburn that were platted in Illinois during the town lot boom of the 1830s. A fire in March 1910 devastated the east side of the Auburn square, destroying more than a dozen buildings.
Born in Auburn, Emil “Dutch” Leonard was a Major league baseball player from 1933 to 1953. In 1896, the Auburn post office was the site of the first Rural Free Delivery service in Illinois, part of a nationwide test. From 1926 to 1930, US Route 66 passed through Auburn, approximately along the present-day route of State Route 4. A brick-paved portion of the original Route 66 alignment, known as the "Auburn Brick Road", survives just north of Auburn and has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places for its engineering significance.
