Armuchee Cleanup and Restoration

Armuchee is an unincorporated community in Floyd County, as well as Chattooga County, Georgia. In 1832, the Georgia Legislature made Armuchee part of Floyd County.

In the Cherokee language the meaning of Armuchee seems to have a few different meanings depending on whom you ask; at the entrance of Armuchee High School there is a sign indicating that the word means, "Land of Beautiful Flowers". Others believe that it means, "much water" or "much fish". It is said that the real meaning was lost on the Trail of Tears.

Armuchee in its metropolitan downtown area had a railroad, the Rome and the Armuchee Station were on Depot Street which is now near the present site of a Baptist Church. The community of Armuchee had a telephone exchange as well as a pants factory during World War 1.

The community held the first automobile wrecker service in Floyd County. On Little Texas Valley Road, just below the "Iron Bridge" on Armuchee Creek there are still remnants of the dam of Armuchee’s pre-1900 electric power generating plant. In the early to mid-1940’s some residents remember one of the vicinity’s first butane gas companies was in Armuchee. The community has a Fire Department as well as an airport, named Richard B. Russell Airport.

 The Yarborough swimming hole on Armuchee Creek is a town favorite and were tourists go to swim; there is an island in the center of the creek with trees that have rope swings and surrounding you will see cliffs for diving. This swimming hole is considerably deep enough to dive and jump from a rope swing.

Armuchee has a primary, elementary school and high school that serve the children of this community.
