At first, it was mainly due to an influx of Spanish and French settlers who migrated there from what is now Pensacola to the north. Slowly but surely over the decades more settlers arrived and by the 19th century it had grown into a thriving community. It was first known as "The Corners" because of the many stores, hotels and saloons that were located around what today is known as Main Street in Winston, Florida.
