South Sarasota, Florida is a region located in Sarasota County on the southwestern coast of the state. While the specific term "South Sarasota" is not a formally recognized administrative or political division, it generally refers to the southern portion of the larger Sarasota metropolitan area. To understand the history of South Sarasota, it is important to explore the broader history of the region.
Prior to European settlement, the area that encompasses South Sarasota was inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Calusa and the Tocobaga peoples. These tribes thrived in the region due to its abundant natural resources, including an array of marine life and fertile land. The arrival of Spanish explorers in the 16th century marked the beginning of European presence in the area.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, Florida came under the control of the British and then the Spanish again before being acquired by the United States through the Adams-Onís Treaty in 1819. The region experienced sporadic settlement during this time, with some pioneers and fishermen establishing small communities along the coast.
The modern development of South Sarasota began in the late 19th century when land speculators and entrepreneurs recognized the area's potential for growth. In the early 20th century, significant efforts were made to attract settlers and investors to the region. In 1910, the community of Venice, located just south of South Sarasota, was founded as a planned city by the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. This development brought attention to the area and spurred further growth.
Following World War II, South Sarasota experienced a renewed period of growth and development. The region attracted retirees and vacationers looking for warm weather and a coastal lifestyle. The construction of the Tamiami Trail (U.S. Route 41) in the 1950s facilitated easier access to the area, further contributing to its popularity.
Today, South Sarasota is part of a thriving metropolitan area that includes the city of Sarasota, as well as other neighboring communities. It is home to a diverse population and offers a range of amenities, including shopping centers, golf courses, parks, and cultural institutions.
