Paxton, Florida, is a town in Walton County, and it is located near Britton Hill on the Alabama-Florida state line. The Creek Indians called the area Big Pond due to the mile-wide lake that was a stopping place on the Creek’s Red Ground Trail that ran from central Alabama to Escambia Bay. After the settlers came in the 1830s, the area?began to grow when the timber industry started cutting the inland forests of Northwest Florida and South Alabama. The town got its name from one of the investors (John Paxton) of the Florala Sawmill Company. Those days are long past, and today it is home to about 644 people. Lake Jackson borders Paxton and is a popular attraction for outdoor activities. The town has the highest elevation in Florida at 318 feet above sea level, making the winters here colder than in other parts of the state, with the winter low coming in at 37 degrees in January. Hurricanes, tropical storms, thunderstorms, and lightning have all been recorded in the region. The most severe storms happen during the Atlantic hurricane season, from June 1 to November 30.
