Osprey is a small community located in Sarasota County, Florida, situated between the cities of Sarasota and Venice. The history of Osprey dates back to the 1800s, when it was primarily a farming and fishing community.
The name "Osprey" comes from the large bird of prey that is common in the area, known for its distinctive white head and wingspan of up to six feet. The town of Osprey was officially incorporated in 1925, and it continued to grow and develop over the years.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Osprey was a popular destination for wealthy tourists and winter residents. Many of them built large homes and estates along the waterfront, including the historic Spanish Point estate, which is now a popular museum and cultural center.
During World War II, Osprey played an important role in the war effort, with the construction of the Venice Army Air Base. The base was used to train pilots for the Army Air Corps, and it brought a significant amount of economic activity to the area.
