Lake Sarasota Cleanup and Restoration

Lake Sarasota is not a natural lake, but rather a man-made lake in Sarasota County, Florida, USA. It was created in the early 1960s as part of a large-scale real estate development project that aimed to transform the area from a rural landscape to a suburban community.

The Lake Sarasota development project was led by the Schroeder-Manatee Ranch (SMR) company, which is the developer of the much vaunted high end  Lakewood Ranch had acquired a large tract of land in the area. The project involved dredging a large pit to create the lake, which was initially intended to be used as a retention pond for stormwater runoff. However, it soon became a focal point of the community, and the surrounding area was developed with residential properties, parks, and other amenities.

The first homes in Lake Sarasota were built in the mid-1960s, and the community continued to grow over the years. In the 1970s, a community center was built, which became a hub of activity for residents. In the 1990s, a series of upgrades were made to the lake, including the addition of a fishing pier and a new fountain.

Today, Lake Sarasota is a thriving community with a mix of single-family homes, townhouses, and apartments.
