Citra was founded in 1881 in a citrus-growing district. A post office has been in operation at Citra since 1881. Citra has two buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. The Citra Methodist Episcopal Church and the Armstrong House. It is home to The University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) which is a teaching, research and extension scientific organization focused on agricultural and natural resources. Her best known work, The Yearling, about a boy who adopts an orphaned fawn, won a Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1939 and was later made into a movie of the same name. The book was written before the concept of young adult fiction, but is now commonly included in teen-reading lists.
