Central Sarasota, Florida, is a region located in Sarasota County on the southwestern coast of Florida. The area has a rich history that dates back thousands of years to the time when indigenous peoples inhabited the region. Before European colonization, the area now known as Central Sarasota was home to Native American tribes, including the Calusa and the Timucua. These tribes thrived in the region, relying on the rich natural resources provided by the surrounding waters, estuaries, and forests.
The arrival of Europeans in the 16th century brought significant changes to the region. Spanish explorers, including Juan Ponce de León and Hernando de Soto, explored the Gulf Coast of Florida, including parts of Sarasota County. In the 19th century, Florida became part of the United States following the Adams-Onís Treaty of 1819. The area that encompasses Central Sarasota was largely undeveloped and sparsely populated during this time. The few settlers in the region relied on farming, fishing, and cattle ranching for their livelihoods.
The late 19th century saw the construction of railroads, which played a crucial role in the development of Sarasota County. The railroads facilitated transportation and trade, attracting new settlers to the area. In 1886, the Florida Mortgage and Investment Company, led by Scottish land developer Sir John Gillespie, purchased large tracts of land in the region, including parts of Central Sarasota.
