It is also known as Stepney Village and Upper Stepney.  A small hamlet, Stepney covers an area of around 8 square miles.  The area was first populated by farmers and fishermen around 1720.  Now it is primarily a suburban community with the majority of its businesses situated along the Route 25 corridor.  Today, Stepney is home to over a dozen historic buildings that date from before the 20th century.
