Solana Beach (Solana being a Spanish word for “sunny city”) was originally inhabited by the native Kumeyaay, until the Spanish colonial era. However, the town didn’t receive its permanent name until 1923; before, the town was known as Lockwood Mesa. Once Lake Hodges Dam was finished in 1918, the city and population speedily grew. And a few years later, in 1922, Colonel Ed Fletcher, who was one of the first community leaders and land developers, bought 140 acres to further the growth of the beachside community. With the assistance of his brother-in-law, he was able to provide access to the beach, using hydraulic water pressure to erode parts of the embankment. He did this using only a fire hose. After three months, he created Fletcher Cove, and the beach was opened with celebration on July 4th, 1925. Today, over 13,000 residents call this four-square-mile beach home. And where there’s potential storm activity, there’s room for mold to thrive.
