Town lovingly dubbed the ‘City in the Country’, Old Poway is a family-oriented community with a rich past.  Before the Spanish began the colonization of the San Diego coast, the Kumeyaay tribe inhabited Old Poway, along with surrounding cities and neighborhoods, for over 10,000 years. In fact, to this day, artifacts such as grinding stones, arrowheads, and metates have been discovered all throughout the town. So much so that there is actually a Metate Lane, just off Community Road. A metate is like a mortar and pestle, but instead of using a stone bowl, a flat stone and a slightly smaller stone are used to grind things like corn into a finer substance. Aside from its native roots, Old Poway has since become a fantastic breeding ground for great schools, churches, and entertainment. If you’re looking for some recreation with a touch of appreciation, you can find it at Poway-Midland Railroad, located in Old Poway Park, where the Poway–Midland Railroad Volunteers gather to restore, operate, and maintain their antique railroad equipment. For a wholesome town like Old Poway, an overall sense of community is important.
