Located in the heart of Sacramento County, Citrus Heights is steeped in history and culture. From its beginnings as a small vineyard to its current reputation as a thriving suburb, the city has seen many changes over the years. In this blog post, we'll explore some of the major events that shaped Citrus Heights into what it is today.

Citrus Heights started out as an agricultural area known for its orchards and vineyards, particularly those owned by Henry Ettleson and his family. The Ettlesons first acquired land in the area in 1877 and built a large winery near where Sunrise Mall now stands. The winery operated until Prohibition forced it to close down in 1920. Today, only one building from the original winery remains—a house located at Sylvan Corners that was once used to store wine barrels.

In 1960, development began on what would become known as "The Bird Cage Walk," a shopping center built around a walkway modeled after San Francisco's Ghirardelli Square. This development marked an important turning point for Citrus Heights; with its local businesses and suburban charm, The Bird Cage Walk helped put Citrus Heights on the map as a desirable place to live and work.

In recent years, Citrus Heights has seen several notable events that have further established it as a vibrant community with plenty to offer both residents and visitors alike. One such event was the opening of the Sunrise Marketplace Mall in 1994; this mall quickly became one of the most popular places to shop in Sacramento County and continues to draw crowds today. Additionally, due to recent climate change-related fires throughout California, many businesses have had to repair water damage caused by firefighting efforts during these disasters—yet another example of how resilient Citrus Heights can be when faced with adversity.
