Altoona, Alabama is located at the base of Altoona Mountain in the Murphee Valley. While most of Altoona is in Etowah County, a small part does extend into Blount County. This small, but now growing town was established in 1900 and covers around 4.3 square miles.
A Gadsden Times article in the October 9, 1983, edition of the newspaper, Steven Howard wrote about Altoona having once been a trade center for all of Sand Mountain. Cotton farmers from all over Sand Mountain would bring their cotton to the gins located in this then booming town. When Altoona was first founded, it was a coal mining town. Did you know, Altoona was named after the coal mining city in Pennsylvania by the same name? It’s true.
Since Altoona sits in a valley, it has a high likelihood of suffering water damage from flash floods. As most of us know, Alabama is prone to severe weather.
