Upton, Wyoming is a small town in the Black Hills National Forrest. Much of the town’s early history has been lost due to the town’s local newspaper burning down in 1926 and most of what we know is from local oral history. It was first known as Iron Town or Iron City, being named after iron creek where the settlement first sprang up on the east side of the creek as an early supply town for cowboys, ranchers, and newly arrived homesteaders. The town was originally named Merino after the sheep breed due to the railroad coming into the town and the sheep trade flourished. The town’s name was changed to Upton in 1901 after a railroad surveyor after some difficulty getting mail delivered due to a town named Merino in Colorado.
