Strategically placed along the Ohio River, where Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia meet, is the vibrant and growing city of Huntington. Collis P. Huntington founded the city in 1775 and used the city as a hub for the C&O Railroad that was designed to tract the land westward.
Huntington has been a thriving heartbeat of West Virginia since its inception. The city has a rich history of economical development, while still progressing forward at a rapid pace. In 1837, the city was called home to Marshall University with some of the original buildings still serving a purpose today. With higher education, steel factories and one of the United States largest river ports, it is no wonder Huntington has had the success it continues to have.
While flourishing rapidly, the city has had some devastating water damage. In 1937, a massive flood hit the area and has caused over 44,000 residents to experience flooding. Millions of dollars in damage were done to vital infrastructure, which put a halt to the city’s rapid development. Flood walls were soon put along the southern banks of the Ohio River to prevent such tragedy to strike again. Although another massive, city-wide flood has not devastated the city of Huntington since 1937, the residents are still susceptible to flash flooding. With the city being at a low level, mountain runoff causes many issues for flash flooding in many residential areas.
