Settled along the Ohio River, Ceredo, West Virginia has been a small thriving town since their founding. The city’s name was derived from”Ceres”, which means the goddess of corn, which was plentiful during the early days of the town.



Ceredo offers a plethora of history, dating back to before the Civil War. The founder of the city wanted to set a superior example to southern states. Eli Thayer, decided to show the nation an economical system that was not based on slave labor. Ceredo became the shining example and the first example for southern states. Ceredo is also close to the site of the plane crashed that took the lives of 75 players and coaches from Marshall University. In 2006, the city was then depicted in a film telling this story, We Are Marshall.



Ceredo is a quaint town currently, with only 6,000 people living within the city limits. The residents in the area enjoy the small charming feel the city has and have tried to keep that charm since the town’s inception. Even though the city has only 6,000 residents, the city still has losses from fire and water all year around. Due to the close location to the river, the ground is always saturated and can cause major concerns for flash flooding.
