History of Westby
Westby, Wisconsin, is the oldest town in Monroe County. The first settlers were farmers who arrived in the early 1800s. They cleared the land for their farms and built homes from the abundant trees that grew near the Kickapoo River. Eventually, a few businesses sprang up in Westby and it became known as a small town with rich farming heritage. It became a town on February 10, 1858. The area was first inhabited by Native Americans and later by French Canadian hunters and trappers.
