New Rome is a small city in Green County, Wisconsin. It is best known for its scenic landscapes and parks. The climate in New Rome is very similar to that of other small cities in Southern Wisconsin: warm summers, cold winters, and average precipitation. The city was named after the nearby community of Rome, but it was decided that New Rome sounded better. New Rome is currently the home of the Washington County Fairgrounds, Marquette University High School, and the Washington County Memorial Forest, which has an extensive system of trails for cross-country skiing, hiking and mountain biking in the summertime.
History of New Rome
The history of New Rome, Wisconsin can be traced back to when the town was settled in 1847. At the time, two brothers named John and Michael Schwab set out from Germany with their families to find new opportunities in America. They purchased land in Wisconsin and built a small settlement named New Rome on it. After the railroad was constructed through the area, New Rome’s population grew rapidly and soon became known as one of Brown County's most important towns.
