Powderly, Texas is located on U.S. Highway 271, only five miles from the Oklahoma and the Red River border. Originally the small township was known as “Lenoir” while settlers were inhabiting the area around the time of the Civil War, but the town was renamed Powderly in the 1880s when the St. Louis – San Francisco Railway was built nearby.
