Garrett, Texas, located in east central Ellis county, became an incorporated city in 1956.  Out of 1,216 incorporated cities in Texas, Garrett is the 1,019^th largest city in Texas, with a population of 847 in 2022.

Garrett was named for William Garrett, one of the original settlers and landowners in the area. The town was an important shipping hub for early Ellis County farmers and businessmen, due to it's location near the junction of the Waxahachie Tap Road and the Houston and Texas Central Railway. Up to 15 passenger trains passed through the area each day. This bustling commerce kept the township thriving until 1960, when trade began to shift to highway travel for moving goods and away from rail travel, and the school and post office shut their doors.
