Seven miles southeast of Austin in Travis County, is the Colton neighborhood. In 1886 it was established by the McKenzie family. At first the area was known as Cotton; this was in reference to the community's staple crop. The name was changed to Colton when the local post office opened in 1897. At that time, Colton there were ten to fifteen residents and a small store. As time went on the neighborhood grew, sort of, Colton had twenty-five residents in 1933 and fifty in 1939. There are a lot of interesting amenities near Colton. The area is surrounded by major roads making the commute around Austin easy. For residents that want to travel a little farther, the airport is just beyond the community. Shopping and dining can also be found nearby. There are a wide variety of dining options. For residents that enjoy golf there is a 36-hole public golf complex. The Jimmy Clay Golf Course opened in 1974, later all of the greens were replanted, and bunkers completely rebuilt.
