Located In southeastern Ellis County, 10 miles southeast of Waxahachie, this little town sits idyllically on the west shore of beautiful Lake Bardwell where residents and visitors can enjoy boating, fishing, camping, and picnicking among many other activities. Bardwell has its beginnings in the 1880’s when a cotton gin was built a mile southwest of where the city presently sits. When the Trinity and Brazos Valley Railway was routed through the county in 1907, the gin was moved to the nearest stretch of tracks, and the community followed. The town reached a peak in 1929 with more than 25 businesses and a population of 650. However, in the 1930’s and 40’s, the combination of the Great Depression, drought, and rerouting of the main road to the new State Highway 34, contributed to a decline in the city’s population that brought it perilously close to extinction. Then in 1965, the US Army Corps of Engineers constructed Lake Bardwell to assist with flood control, which brought new life to the area and helped to revive the waning population.
