Spring City was formerly known as Sulphur Springs, Rheaville, and Rhea Springs. It started as a stop along the Cincinnati Southern Railroad in the 1870s. After an explosion left much of the town flooded or burnt, the town was relocated to its current location and named Spring City in honor of the original settlement. The town was a busy railroad shipping hub in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It now lies along Watts Bar Lake which was created by the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1942 with the completion of the Watts Bar Dam. Spring City’s 2.5 sq mile holds roughly 2,000 people. The town is growing more and more with a steady number of new residents each year.
