South Pittsburg was mainly farmland until a branch line of the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad was constructed into the Sequatchie Valley in the late 1860s. At this time small mining operations began. In 1869 a post office was opened and the community was called Battle Creek Mines. Coal mining began to become a bigger business in the area. In 1876 the post office was renamed South Pittsburg in hopes that the area would grow to be a major iron manufacturing center like its namesake in Pennsylvania. In 1887 the town was incorporated.
