Monterey is known as Putnam County’s “mountain town” and often described as “where the hilltops kiss the sky,” Monterey, Tennessee, is located on the Cumberland Plateau between Nashville and Knoxville on Interstate 40. A local attraction is the train depot. The Monterey Depot Museum covers the town’s rich mountain heritage from prehistoric Indians, who not only hunted deer, buffalo and turkeys, but also mastadons and saber-toothed tigers to coal miners who spent most of their lives underground and timber cutters who spent their days in the woods. It may look like a depot, but it’s about way more than trains. Just outside of Monterey, you’ll find Muddy Pond – home to the best sorghum and fried pies in the state. Muddy Pond is actually named after one of the many small muddy ponds up in this mountain community. It’s home to several Amish-Mennonite communities as well as lots of small, local farms. The town folks who have lived here for generations love the charm and comfort of this little spot, deep in the hills of Tennessee.
