History of Charleston, Tennessee
The Cherokee claimed this area of land for years before European settlers arrived. In 1808, Major John Walker Sr. created a ferry for Hiwassee River and the community grew. The residents in this area called it "Walker's Ferry." Many people began to settle in Charleston in the 1820s and the 1830s. During the Civil War, the Henegar House was used as a headquarters for both sides of the war. It is one of the oldest remaining brick structures in Bradley County. Charleston was finally incorporated on November 11, 1956.
