Williamston is a large town in Anderson, South Carolina that plays host to one of the cities biggest events; Bass Masters. This annual event brings thousands of tourists and fishermen out to Williamston, SC to compete in one of the largest fishing competitions in South Carolina. Founded in 1842, the town was founded on the discovery of a magical mineral springs by West Allen Williams. The town bore the name 'Town of Mineral Springs' until the name was changed in honor of its founder in 1852 to Williamston.
As news of the medicinal 'magical' water that Williams found spread, the town grew and became a major resort when the railroads arrived in 1851. Soon it became known as the ‘Saratoga of the South’. To accommodate the influx, the Mammoth Hotel was built near Mineral Spring Park and was the largest building in the state at that time, featuring 150 rooms plus bowling alleys and ballrooms. Unfortunately, a devastating fire in 1860 destroyed it and other buildings.
