Quakertown was found in 1777 by the Quakers. Quakertown had a very big moment during the Revolutionary War. The Liberty Bell was stored overnight behind the home of Evan Foulke, and the soldiers who delivered it stayed at the Red Lion Inn. The American Civil War along with national economic expansion changed Quakertown from a tiny village to a commercial manufacturing center. In the nineteenth century, local industrial establishments included cigar and cigar box factories, silk mills, harness factories, and stove foundries. Until 1969, Quakertown generated its own electrical power. The increase in manufacturing also meant an increase in the area's population. The Famous Red Lion Inn is a beautiful site to see. It is the site of the 1799 tax revolt that was led by John Fry. Today the historic building is now a restaurant. The old Quakertown train station is another historic site to visit downtown. It was in service for nearly 80 years going to Philadelphia and up to the Lehigh Valley.
